Roger Greenaway: 40 Miles
By Rachel Fallon
Roger Greenaway has very much pushed the boundaries of the usual '60s and '70s influenced pop, rock genre with this, his second album. It has a very ethereal feel to it with haunting style melodies and backing vocals and Pink Floydesque effects, maintaining a distinctly unique sound. Overall the lyrical content has a wry, cynical air to it touching on subjects such as how money and greed affects society. I liked the footnote that said 'It's about arriving at a destination having measured a life's journey in miles'. This is a very rich, dynamic work which continues to grow on you with each listen. Recorded and mixed in his home studio in the chilly Hutt Valley, with the addition of Venn Productions' Dave Holmes (Gramsci, Jacob, Autozamm) co-producing, Jasper de Roos on drums and Oliver Emmitt on trombone. This enchanting independent release is distributed in Aotearoa by Universal.
