Redwood: Redwood
By Alison Millar
An ideal accompaniment to a cold, wet winter evening spent by the fire, Redwood's self-titled album is an engaging salute to influences Neil Young, Bob Dylan and more contemporary acts such as Iron and Wine. Comprised of three friends who got together, ironically, to "share the fruits of their summer inspirations", Redwood recorded this album in a commercial kitchen, set amongst a kiwifruit orchard in the Bay Of Plenty. The remote location obviously had an impact - Redwood's folk/rock sound has a distinctly mellow quality that brings to mind country railway tracks and days when life just wasn't so busy. Driving force Brad Taylor contributes rich vocals as well as picking up guitar, harmonica and all aspects of production. The album was recorded live in a few takes and certainly has an organic vibe. Some of the lyrics are a bit cliché but what this CD lacks in terms of pushing boundaries it certainly makes up for in 'listenabilty'; pour yourself a glass of wine, snuggle up and enjoy.
