Blair Latham, Tom Callwood, Reuben Bradley: The Shadow Out of Time
By Martyn Pepperell
Blair Latham, Tom Callwood and Reuben Bradley are a Wellington based trio. Having eached worked in a variety of ensembles (including C.L. Bob, Little Bushmen and Johnathan Crayford), they decided to collaborate on an album of original compositions. The title may be a reference to a short story by Howard Philip Lovecraft and bluntly, 'The Shadow Out of Time' is a jazz album of drums, double bass and tenor sax. The music is beautiful, the playing competent, and the musicians use of silence and space strikingly well developed. Special mention must be made to actual arrangement of the songs, the music just ebbs and flows up and down with moody feeling and vibe. In the technical department, recording, engineering and mastering was handled by TKO from STL Audio in Wellington. Finally, the artwork and packing is gorgeous to say the least. Check them out at the upcoming Wellington International Jazz Festival.
