Brian Platt: Eleven Steps
By Tony Parker
Brian Platt is a man with a past and his songwriting has, for him, been a way of exorcising his demons and enabling him to move forward. Consequently 'Eleven Steps' sees Platt with his heart on his sleeve and a set of fairly straightforward songs of faith, hope and longing that probably aim for the big statement but fall somewhat short in their ordinariness. This is partly due to the generic radio friendly pop/rock sound that veers ever so close to that of the Feelers and Platt's tour mate Brooke Fraser, but really adds nothing individual to the sensitive singer/songwriter genre. There are plenty of melodic moments, chiming guitars and anthemic choruses and the stellar musical support of amongst others, Brady Blade and Nic Mander, can't be faulted. Ultimately though Platt is following the path many others have taken without contributing anything new to that increasingly populated, confessional, male singer/songwriter milieu.
