Trillion: Audio Agriculture in the 21st Century

By Martyn Pepperell
You might remember Jody Lloyd from Christchurch hip hop outfit Dark Tower. Or maybe you have continued to follow his career and are familiar with Trillion and She'll Be Right Records, Jody's own label centered around multi-genre NZ music, with a strong focus on natural accent vocalists. Following a recent hard drive clear out he compiled this collection of remixes of various artists like Flip Grater, Onelung, SJD and more. Most of the tracks have been transformed into electronic versions in tempos ranging from downbeat to slow jungle. Jody produced, mixed, engineered and mastered the whole release and from that point of view it sounds really good. Musically, I suspect listeners will be divided between loving this release and feeling totally apathetic about it. His 21st century update of agriculture, gumboots and provincial NZ culture is going to make some people cringe while others swell with pride. I'm sitting on the fence on this one, but must say Flip Grater sounds like a vocal goddess as usual on Knowing. Give it a listen over a Speights and a pie maybe?
