Brutally Frank: The Finer Details

By Alistair Wickens
Auckland five piece Brutally Frank have had their name bandied about a fair bit recently, mostly as a support act for various well-established touring acts. After listening to their debut release, 'The Finer Details', it's not hard to see why everyone wants to play with Brutally Frank. Their brand of hard rock is a refreshing change from the diet of bland middle of the road rock and nu-metal that seems to be everywhere these days. The Finer Details is well produced, although with the New Zealand music scene going from strength to strength we shouldn't expect anything less anymore, with the instruments sounding crisp and clear, which suits their style well. The lyrics deal with some dark subjects with honesty without ever coming across as cheesy or patronising, a difficult feat for a lot of bands let alone one only just releasing their debut album. The Finer Details would have to be one of my favourite recent New Zealand releases; I just can't stop listening to it.
