Mike Garner: Cad's Alley
By Peter Dent
Mike Garner is, as he says himself, "a white boy from the south of England" who loves to play the blues. Garner has been living in Aotearoa since 1987, and is now a NZ citizen. Good thing too, 'cos he's been a busy boy' - recording five albums since 1999, and performing extensively throughout the country in every imaginable blues situation. His latest offering of 14 tracks is mostly originals with some cover material, all delivered with an authentic (dare I say it American-sounding) blues vibe. Mike Garner is a superb vocalist and multi-instrumentalist; performing here on guitars, harmonica, mandolin and ukulele. Although his main performance allies here are drummer Warren Houston and bassist Nigel Masters, other well regarded performers gracing individual tracks include Derek Jacombs and Garner's son, Paul. The album was recorded at Aztek Studio in Rotorua by Arron Merrie, with Garner himself in the producer's seat. This is a very well-rounded, warm and enjoyable romp from the get-go, with the pace not slowing one iota. Recommended buying for all blues enthusiasts around the country - and there are a lot of you out there. www.mikegarner.co.nz
