MEAT-BIX: Collection Volume 4
By Jacob Connor
Having dodged airborne lumps of meat at the Pinnacle Club, I can attest that Meat-bix are an entertaining spectacle live, but how does this translate to the record medium? Brian the gimp is obviously missing. Combining absurdist humour with some technical virtuosity, the group push standard rock instrumentation into ever more stupid and sleazy realms. The
ADHD approach is something like a Mike Patton project with overtones of Motley Crue and Gilbert & Sullivan. Kicking off the 7-track collection, Zahnpaste convulses around inverted time signatures; just mentioning The Raven is the Only Acceptable Black Metal Bird There Is knocks out a good proportion of the review word count and single JonBonBonbon gets sultry and French. Peach Teats is a Zappaesque affair and Sandycrack descends into a jazz-fusion workout with galaxial guitar and ethereal echo. Probably the most accessible tune is Hard-on For Jesus, a straight ahead cowpoke ditty sung by a girl. Instrumental Gumjob could be used to score a Muppets sketch. All the personnel have crazy pseudonyms and there is a long list of recordists. Goodshirt's Rodney Fisher was somehow involved. It's inventive, humorous and will make you feel tainted. Visit
