FAT FREDDY'S DROP: Fantastic Journeys Vol 1 DVD
By Gareth Shute
This DVD captures some of the events of Fat Freddy's Drop's 2006 tour to the UK and Europe, as well as their last three videos (Wandering Eye, Roady, and Ray Ray). Ten live tracks are featured and each shows the Freddy's ability to improvise new directions within their classic tunes. Ladi 6 also appears at one point to add her own freestyles into the mix.
Interspersed with the live footage are behind the scenes moments of their adventures around the country, nicely filling out the sense of being with the crew on tour. At points things may stretch out somewhat, given that these are tunes for grooving to, rather than sitting down and examining. Nonetheless, it is certainly amazing to see how popular the group have become - the sold-out Brixton Academy has a room full of Britons lapping up their grooves and the festival arena they play in Portugal is remarkably massive. This should all come as no surprise since Fat Freddy's have now managed to independently sell over 140,000 albums and were voted Best Album at superstar DJ, Gilles Peterson's, World Wide Awards last year.
The DVD does also offer a couple of recipes - creating a cooking show from keyboard player Dobie Blaze's new culinary discoveries, all to the sound of some otherwise unreleased music. One particular bonus is the live footage of Midnight Marauders - one of the finest of Fat Freddy's tracks - which didn't feature on their album. Real fans will also discover plenty of photos and other extra material to keep them going until the band are next playing in their town, which might not be as often as they used to now that the rest of the world has begun to succumb to their unique flavour.
