BEN THE HOOSE: The Little Cascade

By Rachel Fallon
It's amazing how just two instruments can sound so full bodied when played with skill and passion. This is the second offering from duo Ben The Hoose, who evidently take their name from a term for the formal living area in the old style cottages that still exist in many areas of Scotland. Bob McNeill, originally from Glasgow, and Kenny Ritch from Orkney have here combined their award winning skills on guitar, fiddle and vocals to put together a collection of traditional Scottish dance music, mixed with some original work. This creates a vibrant, brilliantly played palette of sound that may bring a tear to the eye of any native Scot, and will definitely get everyone's toes tapping at the next family gathering. The title track was written by a pipe major imprisoned during the First World War whilst being kept awake by a dripping tap. Self-recorded, produced and mixed in Rangiora, Canterbury it was mastered at Studio 301 in Sydney. This independently released album took away the Tui for Best Folk Music Album in 2006, which was presented in January this year. www.benthehoose.com
