VARIOUS: Dunedinmusic.compilation 3

By Jacob Connor
This compilation is a 15-track roundup of current crop of music makers in the 'Eden Borough of the Self' (to quote Boggles Ryan). The collection encompasses ska, sludge rock, shoe gazer pop, acoustic reggae and electronic styles. Many of the featured artists are obviously tender green saplings: RAD's Anger Brings People Together sounds like a young Polly Harvey in training and For The Quail come across a little like early Headless Chickens. Some of the earnest metallers amuse where they might wish to frighten. Mention must be made of the wonderfully named Maiden China and Onanon's ironic in-joke Pink Frosting. The Tweeks present well with a midtempo groove and The Bones offer a crisp brass-laden ska. There's a jump in fidelity with Vanadis & Trei's drum'n'bass track Movin On and the Cinematic Orchestra-style jazz shuffle of The Best Acronym's Shuff Shuff. Presumably these tracks benefited from layered pre-production rather than having been captured on the fly. Most cuts were apparently recorded in an extended session by Evan James and Scott Herriot. While not threatening to set the country on fire, compilation 3 shows the Dunedin sound continuing to mutate.
