Various: Fear of a Quiet Planet

By Jessie Scoullar
The third release from Golden Bay Records which was formed early in 2000 with a focus on electronic music. The collection showcases a range of predominantly NZ electronic artists at the rich, organic and occasionally meandering end of the spectrum. At times the pace is reminiscent of a serpentine river winding through a silent forest, provoking the question: what could cause a planet to become quiet? Featuring Jet Jaguar, Bluey, One Lung, Cloudboy, rotor + and others, the compilation's standout tracks include Shinya's Sound of Darkness and Falling by Protoson. On the downside, track 14 is dead air, the silver text can be a bit of a struggle to make out and the coated paper shows wear and tear quickly. Other releases on the label, including albums by co-founders Bluey and Max Maxwell, have niche markets where this beautifully packaged compilation should also find a home.
