Christina Elenni: Welcome To Me

By Shaun Chait
NZ's answer to the Simpson sisters, Pink, and Gwen Stefani has arrived. Well, kinda. With a pop/diva-punk look and chart -aimed pop rock songs driven by guitar, one time model Christina Elenni is nothing if not filling a gap locally. Her look (verging on soft-core porn in the model show card-like inner sleeve work), is blonde bombshell, and her songs indeed have a catchy factor to them. The downside, it's unfortunate to say, is her voice. Described as 'unique' (well, that's true), it also has that is-it-out-of-tune quality that one often associates with Idol competitions. I wouldn't have put her through to the next round. Discovered by a vocal coach singing karaoke (!), Elenni is a genuine newcomer who had no intention of trying this career path until it was put to her. Teamed up with session muso/producer/go-to man John Michael Stevens (not to be confused with either Jon Stevens or John Michaelz), the duo's strength is in some pretty decent songwriting.
