MARTHA LOUISE: Journey

By Tim Page
Martha Louise is a true folkie and her line-up of collaborators ensures an album of rich folk pedigree. Included is the distinctive guitar of Mark Laurent, augmented by contributions from Nigel Gavin, Julian McKean, Herschel Herscher, George Barris, Steve Cournane and Martha's brother James. A survey of the credits reveals not a synth or sequencer in sight, relying rather on acoustic arrangements to usher the rich vocals and harmonies to the fore. Recorded at Wellington's Braeburn Studios, the production is the high standard we've come to expect from engineer Robbie Duncan. Also contributing is Auckland luthier Peter Madill, providing backing vocals as well as having made the mountain dulcimer used on Sevens - an instrumental duet with a baritone guitar. The tracks are a mix of covers and originals, including a dulcimer and banjo arrangement of Cyndi Lauper's Time After Time, bringing an eclectic perspective to a well known song. The originals are well penned, and include quirky odes to the addictions of coffee and chocolate, as well as thoughtful reflections on matters such as relationships, religious conflict and more serious addictions. Overall this is a well produced, well presented album that would sit well in the true folkies collection.
