EQUUS: Hind Legs
By Martyn Pepperell
According to legend Equus is the little band that could, or maybe the big band that should? It is a Christchurch-based celebration of varied musical styles, now seven years old, with an ever changing musician line-up. 'Hind Legs' is their fifth album, released independently through their own imprint. Lead singer Reuben McNabb delivers some hilarious material, and although I find his voice grating at times, his content is a superb articulation of modern life's follies and joys. The rest of the band you ask? Excellent I reply. Solid, consistent rhythm section, beautiful horn parts, tight guitar work and very appropriate backing vocals. 'Hind Legs' isn't going to be for everyone, but could be a great purchase for the music lover willing to tread off the beaten path, especially if in possession of a good dry sense of humour and a drop or two of social conscience.
