DAVID KILGOUR: The Far Now

By Simon Sweetman
Kilgour's previous solo album 'Frozen Orange' was nice, but the least essential of all his work to date. It's still a damn fine album, but it felt to me like supporting Lambchop and hanging out with Kurt Wagner made him think he could move in that direction. The beauty of Kilgour's music, to my ears, is that he has always moved in his own direction. Sure, you can always hear Lou Reed, Bowie, and whatever else you want to hear - and yes there's now a weight of expectation knowing that bands like Pavement and Yo La Tengo worship the guy. But 'The Far Now' returns Kilgour's fans to the (mostly) familiar sounds of his Heavy Eight backing group and showcases the bright acoustic folk melodies and downtrodden buzz-pop that he effortlessly conjures. Sun Of God could almost be the musical equivalent to an eulogy; capturing the essence of Kilgour's musicality in one gorgeous amber-lens snapshot. The laconic delivery always works a treat - and at a time when Kilgour has just dazzled the country with a live Clean reunion it is great to see and hear his muse still in full gear. Already widely praised and for good reason.
