Chickens Hits: Headless Chickens

In this, the 21st year of Flying Nun comes a timely retrospective from one of the label's most successful acts. In fact George scored Flying Nun's only number one and established the Chickens as a major musical force in the '90s. With their pop/rock/dance hybrid the Chickens weren't your typical Nun band (the guitars were too sharp and jagged, the beats propulsive and modern) yet as this collection shows, they produced a body of work that could be dark and brooding while never failing to surprise. An excellent overview of their finest moments 'Chickens Hits' manages to cover songs from the band's various combinations and collaborations and makes an impressive package. From the early stuff like Donka and Fish Song through to the golden period of Cruise Control, Juice and beyond this is essential Kiwi music. The bonus disc of remixes aimed squarely at the dance floor adds little to the overall package although it does acknowledge the band's interest and influences in this area.
