TOMMY: Tomorrow I Might Go
By Rachel Fallon
In the two years since I reviewed Tommy's debut album '4000 Years', the band's sound appears to have mellowed slightly, whilst retaining the beautiful melodic, acoustic-based organic roots/folk/ reggae feel. Lead singer Tommy Benefield's distinctive voice stands them apart from contemporaries and his poetic lyrics, which are said to take him around three minutes to write, stick in your mind with their depth and consciousness in a way similar to such singers as Ben Harper and Michael Franti. The musicianship is of high quality and the dynamics and composition never seem to bore, despite my experimental repeat plays on a recent long journey to see them live. Although the now defunct band are mainly Wellington-based, this work was excellently recorded early last year, mixed and produced by drummer A.J Hickling at a small Bethalls Beach studio west of Auckland, encouraging a relaxed and cohesive recording style. After mastering by Mike Gibson it has been released by Loop Recordings.
