LIAM RYAN: Mississippi2Mauao
By Truda Chadwick
Former Narcs keyboardist/songwriter Liam Ryan wrote one of NZ's most enduring pop songs (You Took Me)Heart and Soul in the '80s, and over the years has featured as a topshelf session man, toured with Robben Ford, Charlie Musselwhite and Long John Baldry. Since moving to the Bay of Plenty he has established himself as producer and muse to lots of lucky music students at the polytech in Tauranga. Three years in the making, 'Mississippi2Mauao' is his first solo project - a beautifully produced CD of groove fusion instrumentals, elegantly weaving blues, jazz and hip hop into a world class album of 10 tracks. Ryan's incredible keyboard and production mastery combines great sampling with live performances from the edge - himself on the B3, Midge Marsden, Dave Maybee, Trevor Braunias, Mike Abbott, horn players Grant Mason and Cam Allen, with a bit of grit from DJ Hone Ngata and the light touch of vocalist Carol Storey. 'Mississippi2Mauao' (Mt Maunganui) is a roots journey, a soul brew, a spirit lifter and from start to finish is satisfying. Never obtrusive, this is a fine intelligent work of style and substance. Very addictive listening. Check out www.m2m.org.nz
