COCO SOLID: Gentlemen Prefer Bombz

By Jacob Connor
I'd made a note to myself to pick up Coco Solid's latest after hearing Crimefighters and Supastar on Kiwi FM before this review copy arrived. Most often categorised as electro-clash a la Peaches, the duo also share an ironic inner city, low-fi aesthetic with The Coolies. The refreshing aspect is the unpretentious Kiwi clanginess of the delivery - witty rhymes and unassailable self-assuredness make this album an entertaining listen. "That's my bomb noise," Coco says, whistling into the mic by way of introduction. Nut Busters rides an unacknowledged keyboard line from Ghostbusters before Gonna Make You My Boo describes the desperation of major labels to woo the group. Coco and Eric are dieties who don't seem to require devotion to exist. That's not to say everything they piss out is gold, but it feels unfair to crticise something so idiosyncratic. Coco Solid are a ready-made cartoon franchise and GPB is a winner.
