ROBIN KELLY: Shimmer
By Tim Page
Robin Kelly's stated influences include the likes of Neil Young and Bob Dylan, which is suitably apparent on this, his third solo album, which is subtitled 'Love Songs for the Road'. I also hear shades of Don McLean and Beatles, with a smattering of contemporary country and West Coast rock thrown in for good measure. Recording was by Mike McCarthy at Manuka Studios in Orewa, with McCarthy contributing further with keyboards, percussion, and even a bit of glockenspiel. Robin Galley features on guitar and bass, tastefully augmenting Kelly's own guitar. The recording and arrangement is flawless, creating a full sound, yet without over doing it. Kelly's vocals have a gentle, mellow quality which suits the style well for the most part, but there are one or two tracks where he gets a bit over ambitious. Then again it's their vocals that add the distinctive touch to Dylan and Young. Overall, this is a well put together album, and would make a good companion on a winding sun-soaked coastal road.
