RANDOM ACTS: Act 1
By Rachel Fallon
This debut from young Polynesian reggae eight piece Random Acts, is a perfect summer chill-out album. Hailing from Porirua, the
influence of previously successful bands such as Dread Beat and Blood, and Sticks and Shanty from the same area, is strongly evident. While there is a shortage of originality in some of the song topics and album title, strength lies in their harmonies, quality of vocals, mc-íng and musicianship. A stand out track for me is previously released bi-lingual single Skin Colour Brown, with its Samoan-influenced percussion and ukulele. The band is made up of a mixture of cousins and close friends and this strong connection can be felt in their playing. The recording, mixed and mastered by Mike Gibson at Trident Sound Studios in Wellington, has a distinct live edge to it which works well with this genre.
