RICO STAR: Baked on Beats Volume One
By Martyn Pepperell
Mysterious artist or simply lacking in the infrastructure to create a good press kit? All I can tell you about this person (who maybe lives in Palmerston North) is that they use Reason 2.5 to create some lo-fi downbeat, bass heavy tunes and rough, raw, electro meaty breaks. The production is reasonably good and all recording, mixing and engineering was handled in-house. The ideas and arrangement on the other hand could be considered either experimental and risk-taking, or formulaic explorations of now dated sounding realms of music. Your own take would be very much dependant on your taste and knowledge. To my ears 'Baked on Beats' has a very similar sound to a lot of what was going on in the burgeoning NZ electronica scene of the mid to late '90s. For fans of that sound and time period this could be a great purchase.
