Ylang-Ylang: Dragonfly

By Ania Glowacz
Ylang Ylang is Martin Langlands and guest collaborators, and we last met him in 2004 with the album 'Tributary'. This latest excursion is a heavily synth-based, hippy, trippy, dubby bass pulser with spacey vocals, electric and acoustic guitars and bass (courtesy of David Anderson, Fred Maynard and John Hamilton) - the 'trad' instruments really driving the synthesised textures along. Rich they are too. Full
sounding, layered, vaguely industrial. Shades of AR Kane, the Orb, even Genesis P Orridge/Psychick TV (Place O The Dragon) make a welcome appearance. Even a few sounds that industrial giants Coil might use, so the right synapses are being tickled. Inspired, as always by nature, spirituality, duality, science, the universe, in short it's a collage of interesting aural experimentations with warmth. At times relaxing, but always danceable. And definitely original! Self-described by the artist as "electro-indie-onica" and "proudly home-based and independent, focusing on quality original music not just
generic loop-based boom boom", it's true to its word. More at www.yysound.com
