BRIAN 'THE SAXMAN' OMUNDSEN: Reachout
By Simon Sweetman
Omundsen is more than just a saxophone player; he's a singer/songwriter and responsible for all of the music here. But this is a collaboration in that his Musart label is a partnership between himself and painter Clinton Herdman. The concept is for one to make the songs and the other to create a pastel image to encapsulate the mood and feel of each song. Theese two South Island based artists are striving for ways to create their art(s) and make a wage from doing so, but it's a tricky project to recommend. The soft-porn alto-sax title track instrumental that kicks things off suggests Kenny G collaborating with a star-chart reader. From there the songs tend to leap genres. I do admire the label's intentions, though their statement "the art of sound, the sound of art" will be an indicator as to whether, personal-taste-wise, this is something you want to jump on board with - or not. www.musart.co.nz
