SPACIFIX: Much Love
By Simon Sweetman
This 10-piece soul/funk/hip-hop outfit alternate between Supergroove-styled rap songs, Southside Of Bombay's funk-meets-roots groove-pieces and gentler R'n'B and pop-styled ditties. 'Much Love' is a diverse album, featuring Jackson 5-esque catchy numbers and darker rhythmic tracks. The onus is on fun and this talented bunch can certainly play. Clearly the group is very earnest - to be admired, particularly in this context where they are offering themselves as positive role-models to the music-interested youth of NZ. With some time spent honing a sharp live sound they will likely go on to be the country's next version of a jam-band in the manner of Herbs, Netherworld Dancing Toys or Southside Of Bombay. Their positive vibes and catchy numbers capture audiences and this well-recorded album captures the best of their voices along with much of the enthusiasm they bring to their live performances.
