Ill Semantics: Good Musik
By Andrew Hughes
Ill Semantics have remained active since my own early experiences with local hip hop last century. Around 2000 the group released 'Drop That Ish' produced by P-Money, following with mixtapes and an official album in 2002. The group's sophomore installment 'Good Musik' is released via Illegal Musik and Clientele Records, a subsidiary of Dawn Raid. The 13-tracks feature a mixed bag of styles, influences and guests in the form of big names like Aaradhna, Adeaze, Flowz, Devolo of Deceptikonz, and Tommy Stowers. Crooner Lemuel assists the 'Ills' on the first single On & On. Other stand-out tracks include the Nate D assisted shimmy Break You Off, Take It Slow, and Goodbye, a flute-driven tale of mixing love and show business. DJ CXL makes an outstanding performance throughout the package with production credits on 11 songs and a magnificent scratch display on the final track Xtra Large. All and all MCs Patriarch and Nemesis add little to their experienced repertoire, meanwhile 'Good Musik' provides a hand-full of memorable cuts to blaze in the car this summer.
