Brent Willis: Story

When we hear the term experimental or conceptual, a polite smile with an underlying wince is a common response. While 'Story' may not cause a frenzy among the 'music lovers' it nonetheless is an intriguing project. Writing the lyrics was as easy for Willis as going through his own small stories and scribblings as a six year old. The packaging itself appears as an old school book with each song on the CD having a dedicated page on which the original writings appear with their accompanying, and of course, amusing pictures. The music, composed entirely by Willis, does have that do-it-yourself aesthetic which helps to carry the surreal qualities of the lyrics. Mastered at Flying Saucer Audio with Gil Eva Craig, the album is a charming conceptual culmination of what it might be if these stories could come alive and speak. The personal favourite of mine is If I Was A Ruler.
