Bachelorette: Isolation Loops
By Renee Jones
Following the 2005 release of her acclaimed EP 'The End of Things'‚ on Arch Hill Recordings, Bachelorette, aka Annabel Alpers, has released this full-length debut on her own imprint Electroplate Recordings. The title is a nice play on Alpers' creative circumstances - she wrote the album in an isolated family hut in the Canterbury plains. Her lyrics reflect personal experiences and circumstances, given added depth as she explores relationships between people via analogies with sub-atomic particles and cosmology. If this sounds a bit pointy-headed, fear not, there's a playful pop spirit at work here too. The music is more lush and expansive than on the EP - Alpers has drawn from wider instrumental sources, including stand-up organs, vintage synths, tape noise, banjos, space-echo (appropriately) and much more in the multi-layered mix. Guesting are Ryan McPhun and Mestar's Stefanimal, with mastering by the accomplished Dale Cotton. Some songs grab hold immediately, such as Subatomic Pop and the sugar-coated Poppacino, others are more of an acquired taste; but overall Bachelorette has created a very enjoyable intelligent pop album. www.electroplate.co.nz
