JUJU CREW: In Sea
By Kent Walsdorf
Formed by Dunedin music students in early 2004, the Juju Crew consists of Kiwi/Californian guitarist Julian 'Juju' Wilson, bassist Matty Brook and Paul McLennan-Kissel on drums and percussion. Undeniably the combination works. The production here sounds slippery, which I mean as a compliment - everything sits right and is kept clear. The music is sparse and simple with interesting interplay between the solid grooves of the bass, tidy playing on acoustic guitar and snappy drumming. This, with the breathy and poetic but not cheesy lyrics, push them into an acoustic rock, slightly jazzy, slightly bluesy kind of area. The album is likely an accurate representation of their live sound, there are no complications, no layers of recorded guitars, just the band doing their thing. Released under Scillosonic Records and distributed by Yellow Eye, the Juju Crew have produced a very interesting and highly listenable album.
