Cyphanetik: Commercial Suicide
By Alister Wickens
Cyphanetik is behind the Breakin Wreckwordz label which has quickly asserted itself in our hip hop scene with strong releases from Tourettes and Louie Knuxx. Cyphanetik's own first album certainly keeps the momentum up. If no tracks stand out on the album it's not to say they lack cut, but that each one fits well on what is an eclectic and inclusive album. Blaze Em, produced by the heavily involved Dan Mawby will be the most widely heard track to date. Cyphanetik has mainly steered away from the hook-laden pop song format, the backings are often sparse, creating a gloomy feel which suits his vocal style and serious subject matter. As we've come to expect from BWW the production is tight without detracting from the feel of the album. With a strong supporting cast of some of the country's top MCs with D Form providing the cuts, Cyphanetik shows that his success with the Insomniacs was no one-off. This is another powerful release and should prove to be anything but commercial suicide.
