Various: OE:Brazil

The new found enthusiasm of corporates to support NZ music is one of the biggest spin-offs of the inroads the NZ music industry has made over the past half decade. This fruitful partnership is Bacardi, Loop Recordings with Bacardi and its chart success is likely to prompt repeats from the brand elsewhere in the world. The project involved sending six Wellington musos to San Paulo, Brazil for three hectic weeks to make music with over 70 locals. Brazil was an inspired choice of location - there's a South American affinity and flavour to many of the sounds coming from the Welli music massive as it is. This fusion of genres like bossa nova, jazz, samba, drum'n'bass, ragga, funk and hip hop with two countries' cultures makes for a fine soundtrack to the summer café culture of the capital. With studios, timeframes and collaborators varied (and each grouping handling its own production), the flow and quality is a tribute to all involved, including Mike Gibson, who handled the mastering. Depending on your genre preferences you'll have different faves, but my picks are the Barnaby Weir/BiD track I'm Not Gonna Back Down and Maaka Phat & Barbatuques' contribution 2 4 1.
