TOURIST: Minutes Last For Years
By Tony Parker
A powerful opening statement from this young Auckland band. Produced and recorded by UK producer Greg Haver in Cardiff's Stir Studios and here at York St. The album is full of straight ahead melodic rock with anthemic qualities - in fact it has 'stadium rock' written all over it, albeit in a good way. Based around Peter Rudd's vocals and songwriting, the songs are slightly formulaic but this is more than made up for by the power of the performances. Guitars are upfront and loud while the rhythm section is punchy and aggressive. It's a style that sees them standing with feet in both the indie and mainstream rock camps. Rudd writes a good melody and backs it up with a voice that soars in a modern rock way. Not entirely original but certainly well-polished, with this album Tourist show they have quickly mastered the art of putting together well structured songs with the energy and enthusiasm, making 'Minutes Last For Years' a very accomplished first effort.
