PNC: Rookie Card
By Andrew Hughes
PNC's debut 'Rookie Card' is obviously on another level. The opening track Only Child Style displays thunderous vocals and mesmerising beats, provided by Fire and Ice who handle much of the album's production. The album's cohesion is impressive, with joints like Bomb produced by P-Money and Who Better Than This and The King showing PNC's talent and ability to uphold an international standard. Mid '90s hip hop and R'n'B play a major influence. Some throwback gems include Stress Relief feat. Che-Fu, Getaway feat. Awa from Nesian Mystik, and Memory Lane. Other featured producers include 41 of Frontline, John 'Chong' Nee, and Official. David Dallas aka Con-Psy throws in a nice 24 bars, plus Scribe takes the mic on Dead Pioneers which showcases a thorough verse from the multi-platinum emcee. Although this debut bangs from left to right CD buyers have deserted New Zealand hip hop and it may sadly be one of the most slept on pieces of recording quality in our history.
