Deceptikonz: Heavy Rotation
By Gareth Shute
Deceptikonz return to business as usual - the lyrical punchlines and call out choruses that first made them successful are back and their style more confident than ever. For the most part tracks hark back to the early sounds of Wu Tang Clan - stripped back, ominous, and underpinned by crunching beats. Southside is constructed mainly from a clicking guitar sample, hissing shaker, a deep bass drum, and an upfront snare clap. Titles like Stay Back, Go Home Stay Home, Put Em Up, and Get Out make it fairly clear the main theme here is telling the opposition to beware. A couple of tracks - Listen to the Music (with Adeaze) and It's Alright (with Majic Massey) surprise with a slick funk/soul feel. In fact the trickles of funk that reappear throughout are probably what keeps the album from seeming too repetitious after all the party raps and battle rhymes. Deceptikonz know what they do well and get straight to it. Even taking into account the various solo albums 'Heavy Rotation' is their strongest release yet.
