MON AMI: Debut
By Roxie Haines
The gorgeous tones of this Wellington-based three piece, coupled with Henry Mark's soothing voice ooze warmth out of my speakers. The band's folk rock groove with subtle Beach Boy-sounding pop infusions seem to invite in the romanticism of summer. The warm and thick instrumentation also complements Mark's stripped back vocals and the blend of Rupert Mackintosh's harmonies are beautiful, although exposed at times. With all being multi-instrumentalists the songs on this debut album have good depth with layers of guitars, pianos, violin, and percussion - the harmonica in the introduction and repeated throughout Unforgettable is definitely a high point for me. Unfortunately the vocal melodies and guitar riffs prove quite repetitive and somehow the songs don't seem to grab me. Mon Ami have shared the stage with an impressive line up of bands including Fly My Pretties, Greg Johnson and The Phoenix Foundation, and will hopefully stick around to build on this first effort.
