Definite & Bling: Flavourism
By Martyn Pepperell
Definite & Bling are one of the more under-rated party vibe hip hop acts in the country. I have always felt that one of hip hop's hottest qualities is the way it can extract from and expand upon almost any style of music. This quality is beautifully displayed in 'Flavourism' which liberally shows off funk, soul, latin, ethnic and rock influences and elements. The album, which is likely the last to come out from Wellington's all-but closed down Capital Recordings, also features a variety of guest artists including Marjan Shahrinia, MC Surreal, Te Awanui Reeder, DJ 70111 & DJ Poroufessor. Definite & Bling have delivered a solid alternative to American artists such as Jurassic Five, capturing the essence of soul-influenced hip hop while still bringing a distinctly unique and local set of qualities to the game. If you are looking for a quality local release of underground hip hop with a street party vibe look no further.
