Reb Fountain: Like Water
By Tim Page
The female singer/songwriter genre continues making a strong and welcome comeback. Among our own Bic Runga, Brooke Fraser and Anika Moa may get the headlines, but there is a growing line of new pretenders to their crowns, Reb Fountain making a very worthy addition to that queue. 'Like Water' is a set of well-penned songs that display a fluid and articulate grasp of the language. Add to this Fountain's superb, slightly husky voice coupled with a well produced recording, and the result is a top notch product. The recording was done in NZ, Canada and the US, co-produced by Reb and her brother Joel. It is largely made up of of organic instrumentation with relatively minimal digital dressing. The contributing musicians are too many to mention - suffice to say all are capable in their craft. 'Like Water' will make a great summer accessory, a debut album that should be the genesis of greater things to come.
