Bo & Bohdi: Subconscious Techniques
By Ania Glowacz
A cheeky, laidback album that doesn't take itself too seriously. Producer Bo Zwanikken and MC Bohdi Somerson hail from Golden Bay although the tunes came together a couple of years ago during Queenstown's snowboarding season. This album is a million miles away from the hard man posturing that annoys people enough to say they dislike hip hop. It has more in common with the cheeky humour of Eminem (an influence used subtly) and the early '90s vibe (and sound) of the UK's Stereo MCs. A bit of Roots Manuva maybe - white boy style. The rhymes are user-friendly and original and the music has lots of new ideas and motifs. It's playful, very catchy in places and sounds 'Kiwi', which unfortunately is where the weakness with this album lies. Some vocals are a bit flat, recorded with little variation or inflection. Better production (or technique) could've put this into a different league altogether. Still well worth a listen, and big ups to Frisbeedog for supporting a good variety of local Golden Bay music. www.frisbeedogrecords.com
