Mama Said: Humanera
By Tony Parker
2000 Battle of the Bands winners Mama Said have been delivering their brand of groove rock for around seven years, refining their sound through hard work, touring and a tremendous amount of self belief. It's a powerful sound that has metallic guitar riffs layered over a tight rhythm section and provides singer Jared Brown with the appropriate vehicle for his at times soulful semi-rap style of vocalising. Think Blindspott crossed with the Chili Peppers. Produced by ex-Pretender and Simple Mind Malcolm Foster, Mama Said's first album Humanera presents a polished rock/hip hop/funk hybrid with a certain pop sensibility courtesy of some big choruses. Keyboard flourishes and turntables add extra colour to the mix and there's a certain relief in the fact that the relentless riffing inherent in music of this ilk is not always present here. This is a band that plays to their strengths, energetic performances and a positive lyrical outlook, and 'Humanera' does well to capture all that.
