The Situations: Situations Get the Basics
By Tessa Prebble
The Situations want you to enjoy their company. The debut album from this South Auckland band (four parts Shaft) defies its name to be packed with catchy pop rhythms, intelligent, tongue-in-cheek lyrics - enough influences to keep you guessing throughout on a possible pigeonhole to put them in. Recorded at Frisbee Studio where it was produced by Bob Frisbee and Rich Mixture, the album combines ‘60s guitar sounds, Beatles-esque vocals and driving surf rock rhythms, resulting in a sound you will have difficulty sitting still to. Fashion Girl is definitely a high moment on the album with its Riders-of-the-Storm keyboards and dreamy pop melodies. Mans World also stands out, and would not seem out of place on a Connan and the Mockasins album. Eleven songs of paranoia and optimism, as they themselves say.
