Deja Voodoo: Back in Brown
By Jessie Scoullar
Whoever thought Deja Voodoo would make it to album number two? Self-described as loud and anti-social, ‘Back in Brown’ is heavy rock’n’roll and a shining example of spinning comedy gold from a pile of straw. Lead single Can’t Do (What I Wanna Do) is up there with the best from their ‘Brown Sabbath’ debut in the stakes of catchiness and shock factor. The same goes for the dodgy Shotgun and even dodgier Light the Fuse. Auckland Girls is a celebration of sorts, as is Weed On, and anyone who experienced university in Dunedin, or possibly Palmerston North, will relate to Frat Nation. Social responsibility isn’t a consideration for Deja Voodoo, or at least not common standards of the concept. There are probably a lot of adolescent boys lapping up this music - and so they should - as long as everyone gets the joke. Recommended; SOH compulsory.
