Various: Vision

By Tim Page
Vision is a compilation of un-signed and un-published Kiwi artists from Dunedin to the far North. The entire album was recorded live at the Vision New Years Eve festival in Golden Bay. While largely a dance festival, this offering presents a diversity of talent encompassing funk, reggae, dub, hip hop and more, with a strong Maori influence evident in many of the contributions. The 13 tracks are variously emotive, haunting, humorous and thought provoking. Bench Records, for whom Vision is a debut release, actively promotes the live arts, and as such this compilation is a worthy flagship. Considering this was recorded direct to 2-track from the front of house live mix, the recording standard is remarkably high. The eclectic diversity, while not mainstream, is part of what makes NZ music interesting. With the variance of styles, the listener would have to have a broad musical taste indeed to appreciate every track, but there is certainly something for most included herein.
