Pierre Wauters: When The Tide Turns
By Emma Philpott
Another album from this wonderfully eccentric Nelson-resident Frenchman, again on BBX and again fitting an unconventional bill. Wauters follow-up to 'Nouvelle Piano’ (reviewed here last year), is distinctly different from its piano-lovers predecessor. This recording is an oddball mix of classical, contemporary, jazzy and acoustic that Wauters has played, produced and perfected over the last year. In the mix of instrumentals and vocal laced tracks, those in the former category feel more coherent than the off the wall mixture of French and English harmonies which are as often spoken as sung. The break from contemporary structures and continuation which the artist seems to be trying to achieve fails to gel in some tracks like openers Double Shot and Double Shot-Refill, but satisfies in the more instrumental pieces like Thinking About You which does the best job of identifying the musician’s aural landscape. Out on Nelson’s BBX Music.
