Paul McLaney: Edin

By Shaun Chait
After his folk, electronica and rock forays within and without Gramsci, Paul McLaney turns the lights right down and offers us a brooding, intimate, and reflective classic here in ‘Edin’. Recorded in less than two days as a three-piece band (later complemented by a string section), these songs smoulder with depth and richness. Having reviewed all his albums since Gramsci’s ‘Permanence’ in 2000, this is my pick of the bunch. Beginning with the Bryan Ferry-like Don’t Want To Know, Edin is a mellow, slowburning journey - dreamy and gorgeous. Recorded live at the University of Otago Music Department (a former NZBC recording studio), it is self-produced along with Dale Cotton (Dimmer, HDU). McLaney’s burgeoning star just keeps continuing to rise, and while it’s taken a while for him to completely win me over, this time I’m sold. Out on Loop with distribution through Border.
