Flip Grater: Cage for a Song

By Renee Jones
This debut album presents a broad palette of singer/ songwriter styles, from the industrial-tinged Art Robot, past the rocky Everybody Else is Busy Mess to the country feel of This Road Leads Home. Flip has been compared to the likes of PJ Harvey, Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) and Cat Power, which correctly suggests that her songs are not your standard pop or folk fare - yet they are a pleasure to listen to. The instrumentation enhances the songs without overpowering them - there is some nice guitar work from Flip and Brendon Davies-Patrick (who also adds bass and drums plus all the recording work), and vocal layering; with cello, piano and other sounds used judiciously. Flip has had the chance to hone her songs internationally at a couple of SXSW festivals before committing them to record at home in Christchurch and Diamond Harbour. ‘Cage For A Song’ is one of my favourite albums so far this year. Keep an eye out for dates near you when she plays her national CookBook tour; she’s compiling recipes and tour stories for a book due next year. A prodigious new and unsigned talent.
