Miriam Clancy: Lucky One
By Shaunt Chait
Auckland based singer songwriter Miriam Clancy grew up playing in rock
bands, but this solo effort sees her in an entirely different zone. Drawing
on more adult contemporary influences, her sound is more sincere pop with a
country accent. On first listen this did little for me (aside from Girl
About Town which has a certain smolder about it, and Lucky One with its
charming country groove). But on repeated listens the whole album opens up,
revealing some very good songwriting. Solemn Brigade and Fool I Am both
contain the kind of real emotion that lifts this album. Recorded in the main
at York Street and self produced with Steve Roberts, it appears to be
independently released. I love the cover art (the feel of all the artwork is
nice), and the inclusion of a lyric sheet is always welcomed. And at 11
tracks, there’s a natural flowing pace.
