Mike Brosnan: Beneath Southland Skies
By Tony Parker
Singer/songwriter/guitarist Brosnan is an ex-pat Kiwi based in Germany and well established on the continent with constant gigging, festival performances and recording. This fifth album was recorded there with his German band and continues an exploration of Americana/roots music that has seen him favourably compared to artists such as John Hiatt and Ry Cooder.
Interestingly, for a musician known for his guitar artistry, the focus here is more on the songwriting and vocal performances with Brosnan’s guitar work
restricted to just a few tasteful slide solos, some acoustic picking and a rootsy guitar jangle. Lyrically Brosnan’s songs explore relationships and
friendships, often from an older, more world weary view and often framed in distinctly local settings showing that you can take the songwriter out of
New Zealand but there will always be a part of New Zealand in his songs.
‘Beneath Southland Skies’ then is another example of Brosnan’s artistry and it is easy to see why he is highly regarded by his European fans.
