Andrew Spittle: Ella Songs
By Peter Dent
Dunedin-turned-Nelson’s Andrew Spittle, whose previous albums have gone
under the names Dating Godot and All Red Cables, is back with a release
under his own moniker. Spittle certainly is a tryer and has a prodigious
body of work to show for it. Whether that body of work is of matching value
or not is up to the listener. Spittle is a singer/songwriter and
multi-instrumentalist who seems to rattle off a new release every six months
or so! ‘Ella Songs’ was co-produced by Ryan Beehre (Minuit) and Spittle,
with three tracks co-produced by Brendon White. The results are generally
his best yet. Well thought-out song structures, strong melodies, and some
pretty good playing. The one thing that always lets Spittle down is his
voice. He has a unique style, which you either love or hate, but his pitch
inaccuracies from time to time are just not good enough. Also, a fairly
limited range makes some of the songs sound similar to others. Welcome
guests include Jeremy Taylor (Cinematic), Nigel Duncan and Mr. Beehre on
guitar for one track.
