Daniel Munro: Pyschoanalyse
By Andrew Healey
The debut album for this 22 year old, Napier-based, singer/songwriter. Though there are occasional contributions from other musicians, the stars of
the show are definitely the voice and acoustic guitar of Munro – and what a combination! Munro’s voice is pure and expressive, his guitar is crisp and
melodic. Recorded and mixed by Aaron Cash at Newsong recording studios, the production is excellent. The decision was obviously made to record Munro as he is – the occasional bass, drums and keyboards serve only to augment his
voice and guitar. No doubt that he is a huge talent. However, there are 16 tracks on this album which is too long, with little variation in style or
texture from one to the next. A Song We Were Happy In (with piano accordion), Fade Away (with a dark, lazy groove), and Valentine (with percussive electric guitar) are welcome relief. This is a mature album from a precocious young musician – more for the serious music listener than the pop market. If there were just 10 or 12 songs with more variation it would be fantastic.
